  2.      show that the history of the Roman Mass during the 
  3.      Middle Ages is the history of how it came to be 
  4.      increasingly misunderstood by the clergy as well as by the 
  5.      Faithful, and of how it began to disintegrate through the 
  6.      fault of the medieval liturgists themselves. A prominent 
  7.      feature of that process as Father Jungmann‚Äôs book 
  8.      shows, was the appearance, in the medieval Expositiones  
  9.      Missae , of those wrong conceptions we have already 
  10.      discussed: disproportionate emphasis on the Presence in 
  11.      the Holy Eucharist and a very sentimental notion of that 
  12.      Presence, which came to play so disastrous a part in the 
  13.      worship of the Romantic as well as the Baroque period.

  16. might baffle many to explain why there should be such a
